Thin-Walled Structures

J.Y. Richard Liew, V. Thevendran, N.E. Shanmugam “Thin-Walled Structures"
Publisher: Elsevier Science
Publication Date: 1998-11-01
ISBN: 0080430031
Number of pages: 750
Format: PDF
Size: 36.7 MB
_
Book Description:
Thin-plated structures are used extensively in building construction, automobile, aircraft, shipbuilding and other industries because of a number of favourable factors such as high strength-weight ratio, development of new materials and processes and the availability of efficient analytical methods. This class of structure is made by joining thin plates together at their edges and they rely for their rigidity and strength upon the tremendous stiffness and load-carrying capacity of the flat plates from which they are made. Many of the problems encountered in these structures arise because of the effects of local buckling. The knowledge of various facets of this phenomenon has increased dramatically since the 1960s. Problem areas which were hitherto either too complex for rigorous analysis or whose subtleties were not fully realized have in these years been subjected to intensive study. Great advances have been made in the areas of inelastic buckling. The growth in use of lightweight strong materials, such as fibre-reinforced plastics has also been a contributory factor towards the need for advances in the knowledge of the far post-buckling range. The conference is a sequel to the international conference organised by the University of Strathclyde in December 1996 and this international gathering will provide the opportunity for discussion of recent developments and trends in design of thin-walled structures.

The Art of City Making

Charles Landry “The Art of City Making"

Publisher: Earthscan Publications Ltd.
Publication Date: 2006-11
ISBN: 1844072460
Number of pages: 462
Format: PDF
Size: 15.7 MB
_
Book Description:
City-making is an art, not a formula. The skills required to re-enchant the city are far wider than the conventional ones like architecture, engineering and land-use planning. There is no simplistic, ten-point plan, but strong principles can help send good city-making on its way. The vision for 21st century cities must be to be the most imaginative cities for the world rather than in the world. This one change of word – from ‘in’ to ‘for’ – gives city-making an ethical foundation and value base. It helps cities become places of solidarity where the relations between the individual, the group, outsiders to the city and the planet are in better alignment.
Following the widespread success of The Creative City, this new book, aided by international case studies, explains how to reassess urban potential so that cities can strengthen their identity and adapt to the changing global terms of trade and mass migration. It explores the deeper fault-lines, paradoxes and strategic dilemmas that make creating the ‘good city’ so difficult.

Universe of Stone: A Biography of Chartres Cathedral

Philip Ball, "Universe of Stone: A Biography of Chartres Cathedral"
Publisher: HarperCollins
Date of Publication: 2008
Language: English
eISBN: 0061694576
Number of pages: 355
Format: PDF
Size: 7.77 MB
_
Book Description:
Chartres Cathedral, south of Paris, is revered as one of the most beautiful and profound works of art in the Western canon. But what did it mean to those who constructed it in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries? And why, during this time, did Europeans begin to build churches in a new style, at such immense height and with such glorious play of light, in the soaring manner we now call Gothic?
Universe of Stone shows that the Gothic cathedrals encode a far-reaching shift in the way medieval thinkers perceived their relationship with their world. For the first time, they began to believe in an orderly, rational world that could be investigated and understood. This change marked the beginning of Western science and also the start of a long and, indeed, unfinished struggle to reconcile faith and reason. By embedding the cathedral in the culture of the twelfth century—its schools of philosophy and science, its trades and technologies, its politics and religious debates—Philip Ball makes sense of the visual and emotional power of Chartres. Beautifully illustrated and written, filled with astonishing insight, Universe of Stone argues that Chartres is a sublime expression of the originality and vitality of a true "first renaissance," one that occurred long before the birth of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, or Francis Bacon.

Architect's Guide to Feng Shui, Exploding the Myth

Cate Bramble “Architect's Guide to Feng Shui, Exploding the Myth"
Publisher: Architectural Press
Publication Date: 2003-05-01
ISBN: 0750656069
Number of pages: 224
Format: PDF
Size: 5.1 MB
_
Book Description:
Cate Bramble has devoted her career to highlighting the differences between 'feng shui-lite' as a fashionable pursuit in contrast to the original intentions of the Chinese masters. Here she presents the authentic principles in a technical, no-nonsense pocket book specifically for architects.

As clients become more demanding and the competition for projects heats up, the architect is well advised to have many strings to their bow. This practical guide includes line illustrations that present the principles of feng shui, the Chinese art or practice in which a structure or site is chosen or configured so as to harmonize with the spiritual forces that inhabit it, and their application in architecture through planning principles, services, building elements and materials, in an accessible, easy reference format. The feng shui-savvy architect can also benefit from feng shui's ability to match structures and land, and the peculiar capacity of authentic feng shui to forecast development-related concerns including cost overruns, quality issues - even worker injuries and trade disputes!

The author explains feng shui from archaeological sources and evidence of practice in the east, contrasting it with what passes for feng shui in the west. She analyses the practice in terms of such concepts as western systems theory, viewshed, space syntax and the 'pattern landscape' theory of urban planning. For the first time, the sustainable implications of feng shui design are explained with reference to the latest developments in behavioural and cognitve sciences, evolutionary biology and other western viewpoints.
* The first 'how to' guide on feng shui specifically written for architects
* Contains numerous technical illustrations to define and analyse the genuine design elements of feng shui, for quick and easy reference
* Supplies knowledge of the scientific, ethical and ecological principles of the original Chinese system, to impress your clients.

Algorithmic Architecture

Kostas Terzidis “Algorithmic Architecture"
Publisher: Architectural Press
Publication Date: 2006-06-21
ISBN: 0750667257
Number of pages: 176
Format: PDF
Size: 2.5 MB
_
Book Description:
Why does the word design owe its origin to Latin and not Greek roots? Where do the limits of the human mind lie? How does ambiguity enter the deterministic world of computation? Who was Parmenides and why is his philosophy still puzzling today? This unique volume challenges the reader to tackle all these complex questions and more.
Algorithmic Architecture is not a typical theory-based architectural book; it is not a computer programming or language tutorial book either. It contains a series of provocative design projects, and yet it is not just a design or graphic art book per se. Following the tradition of architecture as a conglomeration of various design fields - engineering, theory, art, and recently, computation - the challenge of this book is to present a concept that, like architecture, is a unifying theme for many diverse disciplines. An algorithm is not only a step-by-step problem-solving procedure, a series of lines of computer codes or a mechanistic linguistic expression, but is also an ontological construct with deep philosophical, social, design, and artistic repercussions.
Consequently, this book presents many, various and often seemingly disparate points of view that lead to the establishment of one common theme; algorithmic architecture.

* Guides readers in the increasingly popular practice of using algorithms to solve complex design issues
* Demonstrates a technique used by many of the big name architecture firms, now cascading down to educational level
* Shows architects how to use algorithms to go beyond the mouse and transcend the factory set limitations of current 3D CAD software

Theology in Stone: Church Architecture from Byzantium to Berkeley

Richard Kieckhefer, "Theology in Stone: Church Architecture from Byzantium to Berkeley"

Publisher: Oxford University Press
Publication Date: 2004
Language: English
ISBN 0195154665
Number of pages: 390
Format: PDF
Size: 3.65 MB
_
Book Description:
Thinking about church architecture has come to an impasse. Reformers and traditionalists are talking past each other. Statements from both sides are often strident and dogmatic. In Theology in Stone, Richard Kieckhefer seeks to help both sides move beyond the standoff toward a fruitful conversation about houses of worship. Drawing on a wide range of historical examples with an eye to their contemporary relevance, he offers refreshing new ideas about the meanings and uses of church architecture.

Kieckhefer begins with four chapters on the basic elements of church architecture-the overall arrangement of space, the use of an altar or pulpit as a centering focus, the aesthetics of church design, and the functions of sacred symbols. He goes on to offer three extended historical studies, dealing with churches of medieval England, revival-style churches of America, and modern churches of twentieth-century Germany. Drawing on these case studies, he concludes with a vision of a new theology of church architecture--historically grounded, yet framed for our own time. Examining church architecture from the third century to the twenty-first, Theology in Stone is a thoughtful, fresh, and informative work that addresses questions vital to the present while shedding a great deal of light on the past. The conception of church architecture that emerges is one that moves beyond the polemics of the "worship wars" to embrace the best of both the traditional and the modern.

Gnomonology - Lighting a Hallway

GNOMONOLOGY-MAYA - Lighting a hallaway (by Jeremy Engleman / 62 min)

Emphasizing production concerns, Jeremy lights an interior scene with only 13 lights. He demonstrates in real-time step-by-step how to use a minimal number of spot and point lights to recreate all direct, indirect and "sweetening" light sources for a hallway. This technique uses no Global Illumination or Final Gather, producing a fast, stable, predictable and directable result. Jeremy shows how to work with lighting in IPR and Mental Ray.

Gnomonology - Rigging 101 - Skeletons

Duration: 39min
The first step of rigging any character or creature is to build a skeleton. This lecture explains, in detail, everything that you need to know in order to create rig friendly joints. Using the character 'Jester' as our example, we create the skeleton that will be used for skinning and animation. Each of the joint creation tools is discussed, with an emphasis on how joint placement and orientation will affect rig behavior later on. Once Inverse Kinematic controls have been applied and the geometry has been skinned, these things are hard to change. Therefore, it is critical that the skeleton creation process is methodical.

Gnomonology - Skin Shading with Mental Ray

Rendering skin with the natural appearance of translucency, specularity and reflection is achievable thanks to the Mental Ray Fast-Skin material. This tutorial demonstrates how to build the necessary shading network and manage the many attributes available. While the Fast-Skin material does have integrated control for specularity and reflections, we also look at how to implement a layered shader that allows for higher level control over these phenomenon. Using a female head as our example, we start from scratch and observe every step of the process, while explaining the logic behind our creative decisions.

Gnomonology - Outdoor Lighting Chapter 1- 6

This tutorial provides a detailed demonstration of how to approach outdoor lighting for any time of day. We begin by discussing the nature of outdoor light, the sun, the sky, shadows and the use of reference material. In Maya we focus on a direct illumination approach utilizing both the native renderer and Mental Ray, while also discussing the use of skyDomes, bounce light, raytracing, optiFX, Final Gather and Ambient Occlusion. Various times of day are created, including morning, noon, afternoon, evening and night. Animated lighting tests are rendered and composited in After Effects, incorporating Z-depth based Depth-of-Field, Highlight Blooming and other filter adjustments to make our renders feel more photographic.

Gnomonology - Creating Tileable Textures

When texturing objects in a 3D application, it is often necessary to use a texture that can be tiled. This means that when the image repeats there is no visible seam. For example, when mapping an image around a sphere or cylinder, the left edge of the texture will touch the right edge as the texture wraps around. Or a texture may be repeated several times on a surface to eliminate the need for an ultra high-res texture. Regardless of the situation, it is critical to know how to take photographic source material and tile it using Photoshop. This tutorial demonstrates the process of tiling a texture and testing the results in a 3D application, in this case Maya.

Gnomonology - Creating and Rendering Sparks

Sparks are a fairly common, yet simple, effect that can be effectively created using Maya dynamics. This tutorial demonstrates sparks from a collision, as well as from a pulsing (expression driven) emitter.Starting from scratch we generate the required elements to produce the effect: volume emitter, particles, fields, animation, expressions, Collision Events, particle shader and utility nodes. For rendering we utlize the Tube software render type as the final output, yet we also discuss how sparks can be rendered using the MultiStreak hardware render type.

Gnomonology - Bullets Dust Hits And Debris Chapter 1 - 4

When objects impact the ground, such as bullets or footsteps, one often expects to see an effect such as a puff of dust (dust hit) or a burst of debris. This four part tutorial demonstrates how to create dust hits and debris from bullets hitting the ground, fired by an animated jet fighter composited into a live action background. In chapter one, we create a dust hit generator that allows us to easily create a library of sequences to map onto particle sprites. The generator incorporates volume emission, omni emission, volume axis fields, turbulence, multiStreak and sprite particles, expressions and hardware rendering.

Gnomonology - Turntable Animations

Mov 1024 x 768 1.23 GB
The most common way to present a model, to a client, supervisor or on a demo-reel, is to create a turntable animation. This tutorial demonstrates a simple, yet effective, solution for creating dynamic turntables. Utilizing Maya's two-node camera, motion path animation provides a flexible way to move the camera around the model. Precise and cycling rotations are combined with a moving camera, to allow for various views of the model in a single turntable. We begin the tutorial by creating a three-point lightrig using raytraced shadows and Mental Ray.

Gnomonology - An Overview Of Topology

ZBrush is the industry leading application for digital sculpting, a rapidly growing sector of the 3D industry. While sculpting in ZBrush artists work with highly advanced digital clay that consists of millions and millions of polygons. However, when artists need to transport those milions of polygons to other 3D applications it is necessary to engage in the polygon economy and start redistributing the wealth. This tutorial will show the artist how to retopologize a model in ZBrush as well as how to reproject the sculpting details from one model to another.

Gnomonology - Rendering Zbrush 3.1 Displacement Maps

This tutorial gives a detailed walkthrough of using ZBrush 3.1 to extract a 32bit floating point displacement map from the Stingerhead ZTool (also available on Gnomonology). Once the maps and geometry are exported from ZBrush, the full process to set up displacements for rendering in Maya is covered. Special attention is given to proper Mental Ray setup as well as production tips for driving your settings with simple expressions. This first part, of a three part tutorial on rendering ZBrush displacements in Maya, is a comprehensive introduction to the often misuinderstod process of getting effective renders of your ZBrush models.

Gnomonology - The Making of Jester

This 'making of' demonstration and lecture began with the decision to take a personal sketch, develop it in 3D and produce a lifesize print. This would require the development of high-resolution detail and textures that could hold up to a 4000x6000 pixel render, effectively making Jester a film-res character. Using Maya, UVlayout, Zbrush, Bodypaint and Photoshop, 'Jester' was created in 60 hours. Observe and listen as Alex shares his workflow, thought process and techniques.
A working knowledge of Maya/ Zbrush/ Bodypaint/ Photoshop is required. While literally every step is shown and explained, it is not realistic to have this lecture also be an 'Intro to Photoshop' or an 'Intro to Zbrush', or else it would go on forever. I therefore assume that the student has seen the Gnomon intro lectures available on DVD or here at Gnomonology

Gnomonology - The Making of Fume

These chapters represent a technical overview of how the image 'Fume' was created using Maya, Zbrush and Photoshop. In contrast to some of my other work on Gnomonology, Fume was created without any initial design direction. There was no sketch to develop, as was the case with Jester or Trin. Therefore this tutorial demonstrates aslightly different workflow as I allowed a design to evolve organically. The actual creation of Fume was notrecorded, therefore these lectures are all created in realtime as I explain, in detail, the process of creatingthe image. 'Fume' has been toprow plugged at CGtalk, zbrushcentral, 3Dtotal and was a 'daily deviation' at Deviant Art.

Gnomonology - The Making of Smile

This 'making of' demonstration and lecture began with the decision to create a new still image and record the entire process. Using Maya, UVlayout, Zbrush and Photoshop, 'Smile' was created in eight hours over the course of a couple evenings. Observe and listen as Alex shares his workflow, thought process and techniques. In Chapter two, the simple base mesh is transformed into a design sculpt. With a combination of real-time and timelapse footage, the sculpting session is thoroughly discussed. Starting with an initial lay-in of the musculature, forms are developed and detailed using the Claytube and Rake macro brushes. Tweaking and Masking also play an important role.
* BASE MESH AND UV LAYOUT.
* SCULPTING IN ZBRUSH.
* LIGHTING AND SHADERS.
* 2D PAINTOVER, 8K MAPS, FINAL COMP.

Computer Animation: Algorithms and Techniques

Rick Parent "Computer Animation: Algorithms and Techniques"
Publisher: Morgan Kaufmann
Publication Date: September 4, 2001
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1558605797
ISBN-13: 978-1558605794
Number of pages: 560
Size: 7.32 MB
_
Book Description:
What many digital animators fail to realize is that someone needs to make the software that's used to bring images to life. Without the tools, the ideas can never be materialized. In Computer Animation: Algorithms and Techniques, the concepts and formulas used behind the scenes and under the hood of contemporary animation software are clearly explained for the programmer and the technical director.
Hardbound, liberally illustrated, and with an eight-page color gallery, there are six chapters and three appendices. The book starts with an overview of animation and works through some technical background information, and then delves into interpolation and basic techniques for representing 3-D motion and space on a 2-D display. Later chapters walk through advanced algorithms (kinematics, rigid body simulation, constraints) and then a discussion of ways to represent natural phenomena. There's also a focus on modeling and animating articulated figures. It's important to note that these chapters are not about which buttons to push in a given software package, but rather about the use and explanation of formulas for representing a specific simulation.
Perhaps the best feature of the book is the information and samples available on a companion Web site. Rather than include a CD-ROM, which raises the cost of the book and whose information can grow stale, the reader can find sample animations and ready-to-use code snippets, as well as links to other relevant Web sites.
There are any number of books available on computer animation software packages, but prescious few on how they do what they do. Computer Animation: Algorithms and Techniques is an invaluable resource, a textbook for anyone interested in computer animation programming or for anyone who simply wants to get under the hood of their favorite animation application.

Box Shot 3D 2.10

Box Shot 3D: Power of raytracing in your hands!
Box Shot 3D is a virtual cover renderer based on ray tracing algorithms. What does this mean? Simply put, the box shots you create will look very realistic. This attractive display is often the deciding factor for purchasing products.

Box Shot 3D uses professional technology packed into an easy user interface. It allows you to create amazing web and print graphics with just a few clicks!.

The important features of Box Shot 3D are:
Raytracing
Raytracing allows creation of photorealistic images and shadows. Box Shot 3D calculates millions of light rays passing from the light source to the object. The result is a very realistic looking object. Raytracing is usually used for special effects in movies. Box Shot 3D allows you to use this technology for creating box shots!
Realistic Shadows
The use of raytracing leads to "realistic" shadows. Box Shot 3D calculates the amount of light for every pixel in your image. Box Shot 3D also calculates skylight (or atmospheric light) - light emitted by sky. This makes images look even more realistic.
Antialiasing
Box Shot 3D uses many tricks for fast and efficient antialiasing. You will never see rough or pixilated edges again. Everything will be smooth and very realistic.
Reflections
You can fully control the box reflection, transparency and depth on the floor and adjust them with sliders to see result in realtime.
Transparent background
If you want to use the rendered image in a complex project, you can easily output your image with transparent backgrounds (PNG format) for use in your favorite graphics editor. You may also select a solid background color as well.
Different shapes
Box Shot 3D contains many different shapes that can be used for rendering boxes, dvd- and cd-cases, screenshots, books with soft and hard covers or stacks of books. Select the shape you need, insert your images and press "Render", it's that easy!
Quality control
The quality of the rendered image can be adjusted. If you need a fast draft render for preview, set the "Quality" slider to the smallest value and rendering will finish faster. When you need full production quality, set this slider to a higher value for the desired output.
Easy to use
Yes. Box Shot 3D is a one of the simplest applications of its kind. It has easy "step-by-step" tabs that quickly guide you through the entire creation process.

Digital Modeling of Material Appearance

Digital Modeling of Material Appearance (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics) 10.8 MB
Computer graphics systems are capable of generating stunningly realistic images of objects that have never physically existed. In order for computers to create these accurately detailed images, digital models of appearance must include robust data to give viewers a credible visual impression of the depicted materials. In particular, digital models demonstrating the nuances of how materials interact with light are essential to this capability. This is the first comprehensive work on the digital modeling of material appearance: it explains how models from physics and engineering are combined with keen observation skills for use in computer graphics rendering.

Written by the foremost experts in appearance modeling and rendering, this book is for practitioners who want a general framework for understanding material modeling tools, and also for researchers pursuing the development of new modeling techniques. The text is not a "how to" guide for a particular software system. Instead, it provides a thorough discussion of foundations and detailed coverage of key advances. Practitioners and researchers in applications such as architecture, theater, product development, cultural heritage documentation, visual simulation and training, as well as traditional digital application areas such as feature film, television, and computer games, will benefit from this much needed resource.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Julie Dorsey and Holly Rushmeier are professors in the Computer Science Department at Yale University and co-directors of the Yale Computer Graphics Group.

Francois Sillion is a senior researcher with INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique), and director of its Grenoble Rhone-Alpes research center.

Color Management for Photographers: Hands on Techniques for Photoshop Users

Color Management for Photographers: Hands on Techniques for Photoshop Users 11.7 MB

"Colour management is a difficult subject to explain, and even harder to implement, but this book is one of the best I've seen on the subject...if you're determined to operate a fully managed workflow, this tome is essential." - What Digital Camera

"Color Management for Photographers includes all the information you will need to make sure your colour profiles are accurate...(it) will be perfect for professional imageers who want precise, technical information. This book shows you how to create desired results, with easy step-by-steps guaranteed to help you produce successful print material." - Advanced Photoshop, April 2006

"If you want to know more about the sometimes-complex world of managing color in digital imaging, this book is a good place to turn." - Photo Techniques

"This is an ideal book for those working in virtually all areas of photography and prepress and publishing who have to deal with color management on a daily basis. There is a lot of color theory in this book but there is more practical hands on knowledge of color management in Photoshop . It is complete reference of color management." - DigitalMediaDesigner.com

"Rodney de-mystifies colour management in an interesting, entertaining and encouraging way...more in-depth, complicated subjects are dealt with as painlessly as possible, and distilled with a bit of humour to help users of every level tackle colour management." - Digital Photographer

"Author Andrew Rodney has done an excellent job in tackling this slippery subject, and although text heavy, effort has been made to ensure everything is explained as clearly as possible...All in all, a very helpful title." - Photoshop Creative

"Rodney starts out explaining the basics of colour management and colour theory, but very quickly moves on to Photoshop workflows and ChromiX profile checking...The last chapters in the book contain tutorials on what has been covered before. This makes the book valuable in two "directions": you could use it as a tutorial, but it is also a reference work that should be kept within reach." - IT-Enquirer

"If you're really serious about color management, require presice color reproduction, and are willing to spend money to do things right, here's your starting point...If you've already committed to one suite or another, you'll still find this an incredibly valuable book as you work toward perfect color. This book should be reserved for color perfectionists." - Photoshop User, June 2006
